Crescent magazine is an award-winning publication created by, and for, Southern students.
You’re looking at our eighth edition, which highlights some of the most current and unique stories our campus has to offer. We’re excited to present our spring issue of Crescent.
This semester marked a continuation of classes and campus operations under the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it officially began in Spring 2020 when the world shut down, and we all went home to work, this year we continued to learn how to navigate this new world of education. We were, generally, back on campus with most classes returning to the traditional in-person learning. Until early April, we were under a continued mask mandate, and many of us have still continued wearing masks and following social distancing guidelines as a precaution.
The process of creating a magazine is challenging, even more so that we and our classmates struggled juggling school and work during the global pandemic. But, as always, our staff members are hardworking, dedicated and pushed through, making this task exciting.
We thank our advisers, Profs. Cindy Simoneau and Jodie Gil of the Journalism Department, and our design consultant, Thea Moritz, who is an adjunct professor of journalism and art. And thanks to our contributors, editors and layout, photo and video team. All worked tirelessly to make this magazine an important communication tool on campus.
This edition features many important stories from each of our staff members. With the help of our layout, photo and video team, we’re able to bring these stories to life, semester after semester.

We’re also so very proud to continue our annual tradition of winning recognition from the outside journalism community for our efforts.
Crescent Co-Features Editor Sofia Rositani, was named a finalist in the feature writing category of the national Society of Professional Journalists, Region 1, Mark of Excellence Awards competition for the story, “Service animals support students,” published in the Fall 2021 edition. Rositani, a junior Italian major and journalism minor, is also editor-in-chief of the Southern News.
This edition also spotlights the American Sign Language club, fraternities and sororities on campus and the art of drag. Working for Crescent is a very rewarding experience, and our team is excited to present our magazine for the spring semester.
