Crescent magazine is an award-winning publication created for and by Southern students. We present to our readers our sixth magazine, spotlighting some of the most interesting, compelling and current stories at Southern this year.
The process of creating and publishing a magazine is complex and challenging, and this year, we were faced with the additional challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected each of our lives and our communities. Instead of publishing two magazines, we have created one magazine, encompassing writing from both the fall and spring semesters.
We would like to thank our advisers Cindy Simoneau and Jodie Gil, our design consultant, Thea Moritz, and all our Crescent magazine staff and contributors for working hard to produce a quality publication during these difficult times.
This edition includes many important stories from each of our staff writers. Although many of us worked from home this semester, we still were able to collaborate. With the help of our layout team, we were able to bring our visions to life.
To fully capture the power of our stories, photos and page design were more important than ever in this edition. We are fortunate to have a talented layout team and photo editors who create stunning images that span the pages of Crescent magazine. This semester, seven of the articles have additional video storytelling to enhance the presentation. We invite our readers to view our video packages through our website: crescentmagazine.org.
Crescent Magazine continues to win awards: Our spring 2020 edition won multiple awards from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists’ 2019–20 student college contest. Photography Editor Jason Edwards’ photography for “Dancing Around the World” was chosen as the winner of the Feature Photo Award.
Muhaymina Plair, layout editor, was selected as the winner of the Non-Page 1 Layout, for “Southern Swag.” Samuel Fix, former layout editor, received third place for the Non-Page 1 Layout for “Hearts of the Sound.”
Amanda Cavoto, former editor in chief, was selected as feature winner for “Kicking the Vaping Habit.”
This edition of Crescent spotlights health care and other frontline workers, students staying safe on campus and some unique hobbies. Working for Crescent magazine is a very rewarding, enriching experience. Our team is excited to present our magazine for the year.
