Crescent magazine is an award-winning publication for the impactful people, places and ideas brought onto our campus. Here we introduce our 5th magazine spotlighting some of the most interesting, compelling and heart-warming stories Southern has to offer.
The process of creating a magazine is complex and challenging. With our advisers Cindy Simoneau and Jodie Gil, our design consultant, Thea Moritz, and all the Crescent staff and contributors, we have managed to not only produce a professional and quality magazine, but have had a chance to learn the backbone of this intense and detail-oriented process.
This edition comes with visions and narratives from each student on the staff. We successfully worked together to collaborate and make our visions a fused reality. The skills we learned can help us in the future. This journey reaps rewards, as our fellow students, family and friends, the faculty, staff and administration all have the pleasure of engaging with our powerful finished product.
Photos and page design are equally important to the success of this magazine. We are fortunate to have a talented staff to help bring these packages to life. This semester four of the articles have additional video storytelling available to enhance the presentation. We invite our readers to check out our website.
Crescent continues to win awards: The outstanding photography of our fall 2019 edition resulted in Managing Editor Jacob Waring being selected Winner of the Arts/Graphics category in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence regional awards. Waring’s package on “Campus Jungle,” captured the animal wildlife that shares the campus with us. The regional competition encompasses public and private universities from Maine to Philadelphia. His selection as winner means he will compete nationally with the top pick from other regions of the country for the national SPJ awards in fall. In 2018, Crescent won a national photography award for a global spread in its first edition.
Also receiving an award was contributor Izzy Manzo for her story on “Women in STEM” shining a spotlight on some of the amazing female students in these fields. Manzo was a finalist in the Magazine category.
This edition offers an insight on: talented students in the arts, hobbies, environmental interests, transportation and social issues.
This student-run magazine allows its students an opportunity to connect our campus with the world.
