  1. Celebrating the Lunar New Year

Every year, Southern students, with the help of the Multicultural Center and Chinese Student Association, celebrate the Lunar New Year. The Feb. 3 event marked the Year of the Rat and included activities. Attendees experienced Chinese culture by trying out traditional Chinese food, making handcrafts and jewelry, playing games and learning how to do Chinese calligraphy. There was a Chinese folk-dance performance.

2. Multicultural Winter Welcome Bash

The bash is part of the Week of Welcome and is hosted by the Multicultural Center for the last couple of years. Students at this Jan. 23 event played games such as chess, SCSU and MCC Trivia and enjoyed the atmosphere and eating tasty food. The program is designed to provide information about available resources on campus.

3. Spring Specific Sports

Basketball, swimming, gymnastics, track and field, baseball and softball are all among spring sports on campus. Attending these competitive events is a great way to cheer on the Owls at their Division II games. There is always a game to go to.

4. Otus’ Birthday Party

Each spring we celebrate Otus as Southern’s mascot. Last year’s March 27 event celebrated the recent new look of the mascot outfit. Participants at the event have the opportunity to take photos with Otus and celebrate Southern spirit.

5. Heritage Ball

This popular event encompasses multiple cultures, heritages and legendary figures. This March 2019 event included performances, dinner and awards. Each year Mr. and Mrs. Heritage Ball are crowned. Formal attire is required.
