Welcome to this, the 13th edition of the award-winning publication, Crescent magazine.
This fall, we highlight students’ bravery, entrepreneurship and a collection of personal anecdotes, including features on student organizations, extracurricular activities and their passions.
We are excited to share these stories, reflecting the dedication of Southern’s students who have immersed themselves in the campus community.
This edition also showcases a freestyle cliff jumper, Ukranian students studying here as the war continues in their homeland and a celebrity photographer. It focuses on highlighting many students’ accomplishments.
We extend a heartfelt gratitude to our current staff and contributors, who recognize the significance of a publication created by-and-for Southern students. A special thanks go to our advisers, Professors Cindy Simoneau and Jodie Gil from the Journalism Department, and our layout consultant Thea Moritz, a current adjunct professor in journalism. Their hard work, creativity and dedication have been instrumental in making this edition possible for all to enjoy.
Our goal is to offer our readers compelling narratives of current students and staff. Additionally, seven of our articles feature accompanying video packages available for viewing on our website: crescentmagazine.org.

And, we’re honored to continue Crescent’s tradition of excellence, receiving accolades from the Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in its state college competition for the 2023–24 academic year:
First place in feature photo to former Crescent Photo Editor Ty Abdul-Shakoor for student skating photo; Abdul-Shakoor also was awarded third place in the same category for a photo of a student ballroom dancer.
Crescent Editor-in-Chief Jay’Mi Vazquez won second place in feature story for a story on an MMA cage fighter.
Contributor Peter Schmitz won third place in sports feature story for a story on Southern’s first female coach on the football staff.
And former Video Editor Robert Hahn won third place in video storytelling for a package on cars on campus.
This edition shines a spotlight on many diverse stories. We are excited to present the Fall 2024 edition of Crescent Magazine to you.
