You are looking at Crescent magazine’s ninth edition, which highlights the revival of on-campus events and the “new normal” post-Covid-19. We’re elated to bring these stories to students. This magazine thrives on the students’ dedication to making Southern a welcoming, inclusive community.

In April 2022, mask mandates were lifted across campus, but participation in events remained low. This fall, we saw a major shift in student participation across all areas. Our campus has come back to life for the first time since the start of the pandemic in Spring 2020.

This edition tackles the main issues students, clubs and classes faced while adjusting to the new post-pandemic world. Education delivery has changed tremendously, making for unique stories of innovation, travel and community.

Student media has seen its own struggles with participation, and we want to give a big thank you to the current staff and contributors who understood the importance of having a publication for students by students. We would also like to thank our advisers, Profs. Cindy Simoneau and Jodie Gil of the Journalism Department, and our layout consultant, Thea Moritz, an adjunct professor of journalism and art. Without their hard work and ingenuity this magazine would not have been possible.

This edition features many important stories from magazine alumni, current student contributors and staff members.

Five of our articles have additional video packages that we invite our readers to watch on our website: crescentmagazine.org

We’re also very proud to announce that Crescent has continued its long tradition of winning awards. The Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in its annual Journalism Excellence College Contest awarded the following awards for the 2021–22 academic year:

First place to former Photo Editor Brooke Kuryan in the feature writing category for her cover story, “Connecticut’s Geology Rocks!” published in the Spring 2022 edition.

Second place to former Layout Editor Everett Rende in the Non-Page 1 Layout category for his work on “Uncovering the Art of Drag;” and third place also to Rende in the same category for “Rushing into Greek Life” both published in the Spring 2022 edition.

This edition spotlights the CASAS center, club sports and student businesses. We are so pleased to present you with the Fall 2022 edition.

–The Editors

Staff note: We want to give a special thanks and offer congratulations to our December graduating seniors: Valeria Araujo, our dedicated editor-in-chief, and Rafaela Martinez, our amazing video editor.
